„Pontosan a növekedéselmélet az, amelyről beszélni akarok: önmagáért, az eredményeiért, a lyukakért, amelyeket még be kell tömni … .” – mondta Robert M. Solow 1987-ben, Nobel-díjas előadása elején, és ez a motivációja ennek a tanulmánynak is. A modern növekedéselmélet úttörőinek tekinthető Bob Solow és Trevor Swan alapvető tanulmányai 66 évvel ezelőtt, 1956-ban jelentek meg. A növekedési irodalom azóta elképesztően bővült. Ez az inkább tájékoztató, mint tudományos jellegű írás rövid áttekintést ad a főbb kutatási területekről, az empirikus eredményekre összpontosítva.
